This listing is for a very unique piece of Harriet Cohen pottery. This lidded form is a rare piece by Harriet and it bears her stamp on the base. The form has a gloss glaze over a very abstract wavy slip decoration. The slip decoration is done in black and white over the terracotta colored stoneware. The piece has a nicely fitted lid with finial.
This studio pottery jar is handmade by American studio potter Harriet Cohen. Active extensively during the Mid-Century Modern era (particularly the 1960s and 1970s). She is a prominent New England potter known for her work with the new Ipswich potters. This is a very unique and rare piece of her work showing a more relaxed and freeform decorative technique.
Condition:
One flaw on the foot, a small chip as seen marked in the photos. Otherwise good condition, small glaze imperfection in the finial possibly.
