The back explains:
“This painted Scherenschnitte is an original design by the artist. Scherenschnitte (scissors cutting) is a traditional folkart of the Pennsylvania Germans. This form of folk art was popular during the 18th and 19th centuries. Designs are cut by folding the paper once or several times. A knife or scissors can be used to do the cutting. Color is applied for additional decoration.
Each design is hand-cut and painted before placing it in a frame which has been "false-grained”, a decorative technique popular in the 18th and 19tg centuries.”
